City of Liverpool fell to a late defeat at Kendal Town on a night where the visitors were left frustrated by a combination of the woodwork and resolute defending.

Craig Robinson’s side was boosted by the return of centre back Ian Kearney who started his first game after almost a year out through injury.

Robbo also handed a debut to young right back Ollie Broe who signed from Wigan Athletic earlier in the day.

The Purps hit the bar early on through Tony Gray who was inches away from grabbing his first goal for the club.

The visitors looked in good shape and could have taken the lead later in the first half through Jack Hazlehurst, but the Purple Messi volleyed narrowly over at the end of a good team move.

HALF TIME: Kendal Town 0-0 City of Liverpool

After the interval the Purps looked again to be the stronger side and almost took the lead within minutes of the restart.

Returning centre back Ian Kearney, looking every inch the best player on the pitch, hammered the bar with a long range screamer.

The big defender had another, more difficult, opportunity to open the scoring minutes later but volleyed over.

At the other end, in form goalkeeper Owen Wheeler produced a magnificent stop to prevent the hosts from taking the lead against the run of play.

However, it was agony for the Purps as Kendal took the lead late on courtesy of debutant Jamie Hodgson who fired a great strike beyond Wheeler from the edge of the box to give the hosts what turned out to be the winner.

FINAL SCORE: Kendal Town 1-0 City of Liverpool

City of Liverpool: Wheeler, Broe, Kearney, McCarten (c), Corrigan, Burke, Kinsella, Hazlehurst, Rigby, Gray, Nevitt.

Subs: McDonald, Barrow, Reid, Brown, Devine.

Man of the Match: Ian Kearney – the defender put in a fine performance on his return from injury, could have had a couple of goals and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.
